Reclaiming Lily -- a novel by Patti Lacy

Reclaiming Lily tells us a story about Dr. Chang Kaiping, a talented doctor who is searching for her long lost little sister Lily. A dangerous genetic disease runs in her family, and she wants to make sure her sister is not affected. Her search takes her to meet Pastor Andrew and his wife Gloria Powell, Lily's adoptive parents. This couple is struggling in raising rebellious seventeen years old Lily. Gloria especially fears that Kai will take Lily away from the family. Will they be able to set aside their differences, work together, and trusts Lily to the One who is in control? This novel is surprisingly beautiful and touching. It comes unexpectedly for me because it started off a little confusing with some flashbacks in time. I also feel there is too much frustration and anger from the characters in the beginning, it makes me unmotivated so I can only read a little at a time (on another hand one might say the author has been successful in delivering the story because I do feel as frustrated as the character in the story feel). But not too long the story becomes easier to follow and engaging, there are even multiple of times that I know my tears are on the brim of falling. Overall it is a good story about adoption, discovering & following Jesus, and entrusting the people we love to Him. A Lasting Impression -- a novel by Tamera Alexander

Tamera Alexander is such a gifted novelist. I have loved every single book she wrote, including her newest A Lasting Impression. It tells a story about Claire Laurent, a young artist who is forced by her father to become a copyist. When a tragedy strikes, she is sent to Nashville where she has no family and friends. By God's provision she is accepted to work for Adelicia Acklen, a very wealthy widow, at the Belmont Mansion. Surrounded by Nashville's elite society and people who have passion for art, she feels that her dream to become a true artist is at reach, if only no one knows about her past. Sutton Monroe is a personal attorney and a long time friend of Adelicia. After losing his father and his home during the war, he is now fighting for his land and family's honor. He is attracted to Claire and at the same time suspicious of her motives and her past, wanting to protect his employer from harm. Will they be able to come transparent and accept each other for who they really are? What I love the most about this novel is the author's ability to describe each character and the setting so beautifully and clear, I can see myself in their midst. I also appreciate how Tamera use Adelicia's real letter in the story, it has such power and truth, it will definitely stay in my heart for a very long time. The Doctor's Lady -- a novel by Jody Hedlund

I love to read historical fiction, and once in a while I'll find a story that not only keep me reading chapter after chapter, but make me a part of it, cheering and crying with the characters, while receiving a good message at the end. The Doctor's Lady is a treasure that I won't mind reading all over again. It tells a story about Priscilla White, a young teacher who feels a calling to be a missionary in India. She is unable to go however, because the mission board has decided that one of the requirements is you have to be married. When Dr. Eli Ernest comes to her church looking for supports for his planned mission to the natives in the West, it may be the perfect solution. With both sides needing a spouse, Priscilla and Eli enters into a business partnership and marries in name only. But coming from a wealthy family, is Priscilla ready for the hard journey to the West? And with his growing attraction to Priscilla, will Eli be able to send her home with a marriage annulment when it is too dangerous to travel? I love every part of this book: the adventurous journey, the interation with the natives, the beautiful description of nature, the struggle and courage of the characters, everything! This book was inspired by a true story of young missionary couple who traveled to Oregon in 1836, how remarkable. I highly recommend this book and I can't wait to read more from Jody Hedlund. Out of Control -- a novel by Mary Connealy

Out of Control tells a story about Julia Gilliland, an adventurous young woman who has interests in fossils and rocks formations. While exploring a cave, somebody stole her rope and she was trapped. Rafe Kincaid, a nearby rancher, was just about to leave when he heard the cry for help. Rafe was attracted to Julia almost immediately, she is beautiful and smart, although probably also as stubborn and bossy as he is. Together with his younger brother Ethan, he brought Julia back to her family. When unexpected thing happened to Julia's father, Rafe was determined to stay to protect her from the mysterious shadow in the cave. But to do that Rafe has to face his greatest fear, fear of losing control. That is the beginning of their story. I must say that I really enjoy the nature that Mary Connealy describes in the novel. It is quite a rare historical setting, and with it's implied connection with the remains of Noah's flood, it is just become more intriguing. I like that the story has a suspense part, and I like how Rafe's love for Julia evolved that he finally realized he will not sacrifice her for anything. That being said, I personally think their relationship grew too fast physically with the frequent kisses. Other than that I definitely would recommend this novel to all especially those who love adventure. I receive this book from Bethany House to review, but I received no compensation for this review and I am not under any obligation to provide a positive review.

Pattern of Wounds -- a novel by J. Mark Bertrand

This is my first time to read Bertrand's book, and although I have not read the first book in the Roland March mystery series I found myself captivated by the story and spent hours at once reading it without realizing the time. It is a story of homicide detective March who is intrigued by the crime scene that he found is strikingly similar to the murder case he solved years ago. As he followed up the case, new development is brought up where this might turn out to be a part of a serial murder, where he might have put the wrong man to prison many years ago and the real murderer is still in the loose. The pressure is big and at the same time his coworkers and even his wife seemed to be drifting away from him. March started to question what he believes and what is truly right. When his family's safety is in jeopardy, he has to race to find the killer before more become victims. I really enjoy reading this suspense novel. I found March's attitude, reaction, and struggles in his work, his family, and the idea of Jesus as the Savior, as very real. Yet Bertrand is able to bring all of these together and create a powerful story, I am excited to read more of the series and see detective March come to Jesus. I  receive this book from Bethany House to review, but I received no compensation for this review and I am not under any obligation to provide a positive  review. Thank you Bethany House!
